Choosing an appropriate subject within wealth/poverty for a photo essay can be a difficult task. I have to outline my thoughts and consider the resources that are immediately available to me:
1. Issues I find important within the subject area.
2. Considering ideas that are relevant and in the news today.
3. Non profit organization I could use as a resource.
4. Find an organization that might benefit from my work.
5. Participating on a weekend project is a great opportunity to catalogue how people are making a difference.
6. Looking at photography publications to familiarize myself with what other photographers are publishing.
--> I have to remain flexible and allow the subjects to inspire me!
Type of Photo
By including a variety of types of photos in my essay, I want to ensure that it is both interesting and informative. While the order of some photos (e.g. the lead photo, and the clincher) is set, the order of most types of photos in my essay will be my preference.
Photo essays are a form of art, and like any artistic creation, breaking the rules will probably create the most powerful result.
The Lead Photo: Similar to the first two sentences of a newspaper article, the lead photo should effectively draw in my audience. It should provoke the curiosity of the viewer.
The Scene: My second photo should set the stage and describe the scene of my story. An overarching photo taken with a wide angle lens is often effective.
The Portraits: Capturing an emotional expression or telling action shot can effectively humanize my story. These photos often evoke strong emotions and empathy in the viewer.
The Detail Photos: Detail photos focus in on one element. These photos are my best opportunity to capture specific objects. The captions of these photos should be informative and educational.
The Close-up Photos: Provide an opportunity to focus in on specific objects. These photosresent a specific element of my story. An excellent opportunity to present information in the caption.
The Signature Photo:The signature photo summarizes the situation and captures the key elements of my story in a telling moment.
The Clincher Photo: The final photo, the clincher, should evoke the emotion I want the viewer to walk away with, be it a feeling of hope, inspiration, or sadness.
--> I have to consider carefully which type of photo to use, or either using a variety or limit my self to one type.
